On the morning of September 10, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony for Leaf Biotechnology’s 10,000-ton FDCA production line was held in the Eastern Park of Tongling Economic & Technological Development Zone, Anhui Province. Leading officials from CPC Tongling Municipal Committee, Tongling Municipal People’s Government and University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), together with corporate shareholders and partners attended the event and laid the foundation for the project.

The project will construct the world’s first 10,000-ton production line for FDCA, a key bio-based monomer. With an estimated total investment of RMB 1 billion, Phase I under construction costs RMB 400 million and covers a land area of 85 mu, scheduled for formal commissioning by the end of 2025. Upon full operation, the plant will deliver an annual FDCA output of 15,000 tons with an expected annual output value exceeding RMB 1 billion. Adopting full continuous-process technology, the production uses low-cost glucose and non-grain biomass enzymatic hydrolysate as feedstock. Relying on self-developed catalytic systems, continuous-flow reactors and fixed-bed oxidation units, the process realizes high-efficiency isomerization-dehydration and ambient-air oxidation under mild conditions. The proprietary catalytic and synthetic technologies enable large-scale low-cost FDCA manufacturing and accelerate widespread downstream adoption of furan-based bio-based new materials.

Leaf Biotechnology is a national-level high-tech enterprise focusing on R&D and manufacturing of bio-based new materials. PEF (Polyethylene Furanoate) has been listed on the Key Supported Bio-based Products Catalogue released by MIIT of China, featuring bio-origin, low carbon footprint, superior material performance and diversified application scenarios. Nevertheless, eco-friendly high-efficiency synthesis of its monomer FDCA has long been a core bottleneck restricting industrialization. Rooted in the research of Professor Fu Yao’s team at USTC, Leaf Biotechnology has built in-depth industry-university-research ties with the university via patent licensing and commissioned R&D to advance the furan-based new material industry. As one of the global pioneers developing and producing furan bio-based materials, the company put into operation the world’s first 1,000-ton FDCA pilot line in 2022 and completed verification of a 500-ton continuous-process pilot facility early this year. The newly-initiated world-first 10,000-ton continuous FDCA production line boasts world-leading standards in technical superiority, automation and industrialization capacity.
Up to now, Leaf Biotechnology has established strategic partnerships with multiple Fortune Global 500 firms and industrial leaders to advance commercialization of furan bio-based materials across food & beverage packaging, premium apparel textiles and specialty functional polymers.
